The Heart of Gratitude
As I reflect on my life, I’m reminded of the many blessings God has showered upon me. My family, friends, and countless gifts from above have filled my heart with thankfulness. However, over the years, I’ve come to realize that there’s a profound difference between being thankful for what God has given me and living a life of genuine gratitude.
The Gift Giver’s Pleasure
When we give someone a gift, our greatest joy is seeing them use and appreciate it. Conversely, nothing hurts more than watching our present being discarded, unvalued, and unused. Why? Because we invested part of ourselves in that gift, and its rejection feels like a personal dismissal. Similarly, when we harbor bitterness, anger, or self-centeredness, we’re essentially trashing the precious gift of salvation Christ paid for us. We diminish the price of His sacrifice, rendering it insignificant in our lives.
The Ultimate Sacrifice
Jesus paid the ultimate price to give us eternal life through Him. As 1 John 4:9-10 reminds us, “God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him. This is real love — not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” This truth has led me to confront the depths of my own depravity, acknowledging the sorrow and heartache my sin has caused. By doing so, I’ve developed a hatred for sin and a passion to live in obedience to God’s Word.
Living in Dependence
I’ve come to realize that I cannot live a life of gratitude in my own strength; I must rely on God’s guidance and empowerment. As I’ve grown in awareness of my own limitations, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for God’s incredible sacrifice on my behalf. Now, I ask myself regularly:
- Am I living a life of genuine gratitude to my Savior, who died to set me free?
- Am I diminishing the price He paid for me by the choices I make?
A Life of Gratitude
As we ponder these questions, may we be reminded of the importance of living a life that honors the ultimate sacrifice Christ made for us. May our hearts overflow with gratitude, and may our choices reflect the value we place on the gift of salvation.
