Embracing the Humility of Christ

In the pursuit of spiritual growth, we often find ourselves striving to emulate the character of Jesus. But what does it truly mean to have the attitude of Christ? The apostle Paul writes in Philippians 2:5, “Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had.” But what was this attitude that earned Him such great exaltation?

The Mark of Humility

Christ’s character was defined by self-emptying and self-sacrifice. Though He was God, He chose not to cling to His divine rights. Instead, He took on the humble form of a slave and obediently surrendered Himself to a criminal’s death on the cross (Philippians 2:6-8). This radical humility was the hallmark of Christ’s life, and it is the very attitude we are called to imitate.

Conformed to the Likeness of God

As we seek to follow in Christ’s footsteps, we must recognize that our ultimate goal is not to exalt ourselves, but to be conformed into the likeness of God. This requires a willingness to surrender our own desires and interests for the sake of others. It means living with the sole intention of pleasing God and blessing those around us.

The Power of God at Work

But how can we possibly attain such a lofty standard? The answer lies not in our own abilities, but in the power of God working within us. As Paul reminds us in Philippians 2:13, “God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey Him and the power to do what pleases Him.” This is the key to unlocking the secret of Christ’s humility and making it our own.

A Life of Prayer and Surrender

So let us make it our aim, as we pray, to cultivate the attitude of Christ. Let us surrender our own ambitions and desires to the will of God, and seek to live a life of obedience and humility. As we do, we will find that the power of God is at work within us, transforming us into the very likeness of Christ.
