Tuning Out: 10 Ways to Miss God’s Voice
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life and miss out on the most important conversation of all – the one with God. If you’re finding yourself struggling to hear from Him, it may be because of one or more of these common obstacles.
1. A Life Without Margins
When we fill our lives with too much activity, we leave no room for stillness and quiet contemplation. Psalm 46:10 reminds us to “Be still, cease striving, and know that I am God.” Don’t let busyness crowd out your ability to hear from God.
2. The Danger of Self-Sufficiency
We all need people in our lives who can pray for us and support us spiritually. Yet, many Christian leaders admit to not having a prayer base. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and acknowledge your needs.
3. Responding to Every Need
Jesus didn’t respond to every need that came His way. Neither should we. Learn to discern what God is calling you to do and don’t try to fix everything on your own.
4. Asking Questions
We all have questions, and we’ll look for answers somewhere. But only God has the eternal truth we seek. Don’t be afraid to ask Him your tough questions.
5. Exhaustion and Burnout
Physical, mental, and emotional fatigue can drown out God’s still, small voice. Take care of yourself and prioritize rest and refreshment.
6. Ignoring the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit speaks words of truth and comfort. Don’t slight His work or fail to rely on Him. This will shortchange your ability to hear from God.
7. Insisting on Comfort
If God spoke to you, would it upset your status quo? Don’t let self-satisfaction and lack of vision keep you from hearing from God.
8. The Trap of Religion
Religion can give us tunnel vision, making us think we have all the answers. But this can lead to a shallow faith that misses out on the depths of God’s grace.
9. Unseen Spiritual Battles
We’re not fighting flesh and blood, but unseen spiritual battles. Don’t just focus on the surface level. Be informed and armed to overcome the enemy’s attacks.
10. Tolerating Unconfessed Sin
Unconfessed sin can dominate our lives and drown out God’s voice. Draw near to God with a clean conscience and follow Jesus’ example of slipping away to spend time with the Father.
By recognizing and addressing these obstacles, we can tune in to God’s voice and deepen our relationship with Him.
