The Surprising Truth About God’s “Unfairness”
Have you ever struggled to understand why God asks us to love our enemies, lend money to those who won’t pay us back, and be kind to the ungrateful and wicked? It seems to go against our sense of justice and fairness. But what if this is exactly the point?
A Reflection of Ourselves
Jesus is not asking us to be kind to others because we are holy and deserving, but because we are just as flawed and imperfect as they are. The truth is, there is little difference between the most ungrateful, wicked people we can think of and ourselves. We have all received God’s kindness and mercy when we didn’t deserve it.
A Call to Mercy
This is why Jesus says, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful [to you].” He is calling us to reflect the same kindness and compassion that God has shown us. When we choose not to judge others, we open ourselves up to receiving God’s mercy and grace.
Rejoicing in the Inequity of Grace
Rather than seeing God’s “unfairness” as a problem, we can rejoice in the glorious inequity of grace that has made room for us. In the same spirit, we can make room in our hearts for others, loving them with the same kindness and compassion that God has shown us.
A New Perspective
When we see things from this perspective, it changes everything. We are no longer trying to earn God’s favor or prove ourselves worthy. Instead, we are free to love and serve others, knowing that we have already received God’s mercy and grace.
