Staying Faithful in the Silence

As we navigate the ups and downs of life, it’s easy to get discouraged when our prayers go unanswered and God feels distant. But what can we learn from Zechariah, a man who loved God and struggled with doubt?

A Model of Perseverance

Zechariah’s story is often overlooked, except during the Christmas season. However, his example is one that we can learn from throughout the year. Despite his deepest longings remaining unsatisfied, he continued to fulfill his spiritual duties. He didn’t let his doubts and uncertainties lead him to abandon his faith or isolate himself from the community.

The Power of Silent Prayers

During the months of his wife’s pregnancy, Zechariah’s prayers were silent ones. He couldn’t hear God’s voice or see Him working, but he continued to commune with his Heavenly Father in the stillness of his heart. It was his years of faithful service that provided strength during those silent months.

Finding Strength in Community

When we’re struggling to hear God’s voice or feeling like we’re making no progress in our faith, it’s tempting to pull away from the community. But gathering with fellow Christians, participating in communion, and engaging in spiritual practices can provide the sustenance we need to keep going.

A Prayer for Courage

God, give us the courage to keep on when we don’t hear Your voice or when we seem to be making no progress in our faith. Teach us again that You are near, even when we can’t feel Your presence.

Reflection

How has practicing the essentials of the Christian faith helped you during dark times? What lessons can you learn from Zechariah’s example of perseverance and faithfulness?
