The True Meaning of Easter: Beyond the Bells and Rituals

As a child in Austria, I vividly remember the majestic church with its towering bell tower that stood tall in our neighborhood. The bells would chime in every morning and evening, and on special occasions, filling the air with their melodious sound. However, there was one day when the bells remained silent – Good Friday. On this somber day, the priest would use a mournful instrument to remind us of Christ’s suffering, casting a spell of sorrow over the community.

The Joyous Sound of Easter

But then came Easter Sunday, and with it, the glorious symphony of bells that echoed across rooftops, hills, and valleys, proclaiming the good news: “Jesus has risen from the dead!” As I arrived at the church, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of disappointment. The life-sized crucifix of Jesus’ body still hung on the cross, leaving me wondering, “If Jesus has risen, why is He still there?” This experience left an indelible mark on my mind, making me realize that we often go through the motions of celebrating Easter without truly understanding its significance.

From Rituals to Reality

We accept the resurrection of Jesus as part of our faith, but how does it impact our daily lives? The risen Lord Jesus Christ is not just a distant figure, preparing a place for us in heaven. He is present among us, seeking to dwell within us and work through us. But how can we experience this reality? We must surrender our selfish ways and yield to Christ on a daily basis, allowing Him to become our very life. It’s no longer about trying harder, but trusting more. As we depend on Him, we discover the freedom that comes with this realization.

A Prayer of Dependence

“Jesus, I depend on Your strength and Your life in me today. I want to do Your will and Your work today. What is it You want us to do today?” May this prayer become our daily confession, as we seek to live out the true meaning of Easter. May the joyous sound of the bells remind us of the resurrected Christ, who dwells within us, guiding us to live a life that honors Him.
