The Unparalleled Ministry of Jesus: A Theology of Hebrews
In the book of Hebrews, we find a rich tapestry of theological themes that weave together to form a majestic portrait of Jesus Christ. This epistle is distinct in its presentation of the superiority of Jesus’ priestly ministry and his once-for-all sacrifice, which cleanses our consciences and opens access to the presence of God.
Jesus: The Perfect Priest
Hebrews introduces us to Jesus as the perfect priest, who has been chosen by God to minister on our behalf. Unlike the Aaronic priests, who were limited by their ancestry and mortal lives, Jesus’ appointment is by divine oath, and he holds his priesthood permanently. His indestructible life and ceaseless intercession guarantee the blessings of the new covenant for those who approach God through him.
The New Covenant: A Better Promise
The book of Hebrews provides the fullest understanding of the covenantal structure of God’s plan of redemption and revelation. The new covenant, promised by Jeremiah and inaugurated by Jesus, replaces the old and obsolete Sinai covenant. This better promise is mediated and guaranteed by Jesus, who offers his body and blood once for all, cleansing and perfecting worshippers’ consciences forever.
Enduring in Faith
While Hebrews urges us to fix our hearts and hopes on Jesus, who sits at God’s right hand in heaven, the preacher is vividly aware of the faith-threatening challenges that confront us on this sin-sick earth. The original congregation had endured loss and persecution, and we too face trials and temptations that can erode our trust in Christ. Yet, we are summoned to endure by the example and testimony of ancient people of faith who lived and suffered in hope, trusting God’s promises about things not yet seen.
Navigating the Law’s Complexities
Hebrews navigates the Law’s puzzling complexities for us, leading us to their fulfillment in Jesus. By making its case for the superiority of Jesus’ priestly ministry to every aspect of the old covenant’s provision for reconciliation with God and access to God, Hebrews provides the Bible’s fullest explanation of the significance of the Law’s instructions for the tabernacle’s design and rituals.
A Heavenly Homeland
Our destiny is a heavenly homeland, an abiding city “whose designer and maker is God.” But at present, we are pilgrims in the wilderness, summoned to endure by the example and testimony of ancient people of faith. By focusing on their faith, Hebrews provides the lens through which we should view—and learn from—Old Testament historical narratives and the checkered characters they describe.
