From Chaos to Cosmos: God’s Sovereign Plan for Redemption

Restoring Order from Chaos: The Sovereignty of God

In the beginning, God created a harmonious universe, a cosmos where everything functioned in perfect balance. However, this order was disrupted by chaos, which entered the world through humanity’s disobedience. Throughout history, God has been working to restore his original creation, bringing order out of chaos through Jesus Christ.

The Original Chaos

In Genesis 1:2, we see the earth in a state of primeval chaos, described as “without form and void.” This chaos was not evil, but rather a state of disorder. God created the seas and great sea creatures, which would later be used to represent chaos in Scripture.

The Fall into Sin

When humanity disobeyed God’s command not to eat from the tree of knowledge, chaos invaded God’s good creation. The harmony of Paradise was broken, and fear, blame, and death entered the world. God’s curse on the earth resulted in enmity between humans, animals, and the natural world.

God’s Response to Chaos

Despite humanity’s rebellion, God sought to restore cosmos to his creation. He sent a flood to cleanse the earth, saving Noah and his family. After the flood, God made a covenant with Noah, promising to maintain the regularity of his creation.

The Battle between Chaos and Cosmos

Throughout history, God has been working to restore his original creation. In the fullness of time, Jesus Christ was born, the victorious Seed of the woman. Jesus is the light that drives back the darkness of chaos, healing the sick, casting out demons, and raising the dead.

The Sovereignty of Jesus

Jesus demonstrated his sovereignty over chaos by rebuking the wind and calming the sea, raising people from death, and ultimately rising from the dead himself. With his resurrection and ascension to God’s right hand, Jesus showed that he is sovereign even over the chaos of death and rules from his heavenly throne to restore cosmos to God’s creation.

The End of Chaos

In the end, Satan, the personification of chaos, will be thrown into the lake of fire, the ultimate form of chaos. Death and Hades will also be thrown into the lake of fire, marking the end of every form of chaos on earth. God will create a new heaven and a new earth, where there will be no more chaos, but only perfect cosmos in his renewed creation.

The Restoration of Paradise

In the new creation, the curse of death will be lifted, and the effects of sin will be reversed. The tree of life will flourish, and God’s people will worship him, seeing his face and bearing his name on their foreheads. Night, darkness, and chaos will be no more, and God’s people will reign forever and ever.
