Unveiling the Gospel in Ezekiel
At first glance, the book of Ezekiel may seem like an obscure collection of judgment oracles with a few scattered passages about God’s grace. However, when understood correctly, Ezekiel reveals a beautiful narrative of God’s unwavering love and redemption for His people.
A Story of Restoration
The book of Ezekiel can be divided into three main sections. The first 24 chapters contain a series of oracles that promise judgment against Israel due to their sin. However, in chapters 24-33, the focus shifts to God’s judgment against the nations surrounding Israel, demonstrating His sovereignty over all nations. Finally, in chapter 33, the tone changes once more, as God begins to promise restoration to His people.
Life from Death
Ezekiel proclaims that life will reign where there was once only death. God will pour out His Spirit on His people, and the destroyed temple, a symbol of God’s presence, will be restored. This promise is not limited to Israel alone; it extends to all people, for all have sinned and deserve God’s judgment.
A King on David’s Throne
Throughout Ezekiel, God promises to restore His people through the work of a king who will sit on David’s throne. This prophecy is remarkable, given that the last king of the Davidic line, Jehoiachin, had been exiled. Yet, God assures us that the throne will not remain empty forever. A new ruler will sit on David’s throne, reigning eternally, making atonement for His people’s sins, and bringing them back into God’s presence.
A Powerful Witness to the Gospel
In Ezekiel, we see a powerful witness to the coming of Jesus Christ and the boundless grace of God in forgiving sinners. We learn about God’s holiness, the consequences of rebellion, and the divine wrath such sin deserves. However, we also discover God’s love for His people despite their rebellion and His promise to send a Savior who would restore them, give them life, and bring them to live in His presence forever.
The Gospel in the Old Testament
Ezekiel is just one example of how the Old Testament points to the gospel of Jesus Christ. From Genesis to Malachi, the entire Old Testament sets the stage for the drama of Scripture, foreshadowing Jesus as deliverer and mediator for God’s people. As we explore the Old Testament, we find that it is ultimately about Jesus, the One who brings life, restoration, and redemption to all who trust in Him.
