Awaiting Christ’s Return: Living with Expectation and Vigilance

The Call to Vigilance: Awaiting Christ’s Return

As Jesus concludes the Olivet Discourse, he leaves his disciples with a profound command: “Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come” (Mark 13:32-33). This call to vigilance is just as relevant for believers today as it was when Jesus first spoke these words.

The Mystery of the End Times

Despite the disciples’ request for clear signs of the end, Jesus’ response is intentionally vague. Not even he, the Son of God, knows when the end will come. This apparent limitation on Jesus’ knowledge may seem puzzling, but it underscores the importance of trusting in God’s sovereignty. In his human state, Jesus chose to submit to the Father’s will, and it was not the Father’s will for him to know the time of his return.

A Life of Expectation

Jesus’ command to “stay awake” is repeated five times in these verses, emphasizing the importance of living in a state of constant expectation. Believers are called to be like the wise doorkeeper, waiting in anticipation of their master’s return and refusing to become complacent.

The Everyday Implications

As we go about our daily lives, it’s easy to forget that Christ will return as unexpectedly as a “thief in the night” (1 Thess. 5:2). Yet, Jesus’ command to stay awake and alert remains just as relevant in the midst of our mundane routines. We must cultivate a mindset of expectation, awaiting Christ’s return with eagerness and anticipation.

A Call to Action

In light of Jesus’ command, how can we live our lives in a state of expectation? By prioritizing our relationship with God, seeking to understand his will, and living each day with intentionality. As we await Christ’s return, may we be found faithful, living lives that honor him and reflect the hope of eternity.
