A Potent Fragrance: Humility and Faith

When we seek God with our faces down, the image that comes to mind is one of reverence and submission. We approach Him with humility, acknowledging our sins and the sins of our cultures, and begging for mercy and forgiveness. However, in our pursuit of humility, let us not forget the power of faith. As Hebrews 11:1-6 reminds us, without faith, it is impossible to please God.

The Mixture of Humility and Faith

Humility and faith are not mutually exclusive; in fact, they are a potent combination. Scripture provides numerous examples of individuals who demonstrated this blend of humility and faith, moving the heart of God in the process. Consider the Canaanite woman who responded to Jesus’ apparent insult with a desperate yet humble plea: “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs feed on the crumbs” (Matthew 15:27). Jesus commended her great faith, demonstrating that humility and faith can coexist.

Elijah’s Example

Elijah’s experience on Mt. Carmel offers another powerful illustration of the mixture of humility and faith. With his face between his knees, Elijah prayed seven times for an end to the drought in Israel. Despite the cloudless sky, Elijah’s faith recognized God’s answer to prayer when his servant reported a small cloud, no larger than a man’s hand. Within minutes, this tiny cloud transformed into a massive downpour, ending three-and-a-half years of national drought (1 Kings 18:42-45).

Breakthrough through Humility and Faith

If we desire to see a spiritual outpouring in our land, we must combine humility with faith in the goodness of God. By staying low in intercession and refusing to give up on our nation, we can experience breakthrough. As we bow low before God, we can pray with confidence: “Lord, forgive our sins, show Yourself mighty against our enemies, and empower us to bring the lost to You. Let Your name be exalted throughout the land and Your mercy lifted to the heavens.”

A Prayer of Humility and Faith

Lord, like Elijah, I bow low before You, humbling myself in Your presence. Forgive our sins, Lord God, for they are many. Show Yourself mighty against our enemies. Master, even as we bow low before You, we refuse to give up on our nation. Lord, forgive, heal, and then empower us to bring the lost to You. Let Your name be exalted throughout the land and Your mercy lifted to the heavens. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
