Finding Our Way in a World Without Direction

As a child, I was given a clever trick to remember the directions: my eyes faced north, the back of my head faced south, my left hand pointed west, and my right hand east. But it wasn’t until later that I realized this was just a clever ruse, and not an actual innate sense of direction. In fact, I had to learn to rely on the sun to get a rough idea of where west was.

A Society Without a Moral Compass

Fast forward to today, and it seems like our society has lost its moral compass altogether. We have laws, but they’re often used as a means to find loopholes and excuses rather than guiding principles. Children are taught to be overly tolerant, to the point where all behavior is seen as acceptable. But is this really the kind of world we want to live in?

A Guide in the Wilderness

When the Hebrew nation left Egypt, they had a physical guide – God’s compassion. Because He cared for them, He guided them safely through the wilderness. As Nehemiah 9:19 says, “Because of your great compassion you did not abandon them in the wilderness. By day the pillar of cloud did not fail to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take.”

The Bible as Our Compass

In our own life journey, the Bible serves as our best compass. When we look to Jesus as our example, we get our moral and spiritual bearings. He shows us which way to go, and He is the Way (John 14:6). Because of His compassion, once we accept Him as our Savior, He gives us an internal compass – the Holy Spirit – to guide us.

Finding Our Way

I may not always know which direction to go, but I know Who to look to for guidance. Whether it’s a decision I need to make, a direction my life needs to take, or whether I should just stand still and wait, I look to the Son. If you’re feeling lost today, seek the compassion of God. Let Him direct your path. He won’t steer you wrong.
