Overcoming Doubt: Finding Confidence in the Dark Waters of Faith

Navigating the Dark Waters of Doubt

Dear friend,

Do you ever find yourself questioning the very foundations of your faith? Do doubts creep in like a thief in the night, leaving you feeling uncertain and unsure? You’re not alone. I’ve been there too.

As someone who has wrestled with doubt, I’ve learned that it’s not something to be feared or ashamed of. In fact, it’s a natural part of our spiritual journey. The Bible even acknowledges it, with verses like Jude 22 encouraging us to “have mercy on those who doubt.”

The Unexpected Companion of Doubt

Even the most unlikely of people can struggle with doubt. Take John the Baptist, for example. Despite being Jesus’ cousin and having witnessed his miraculous birth, John still found himself wondering if Jesus was truly the Messiah (Matthew 11:3). If someone as close to Jesus as John can doubt, then we shouldn’t be surprised when we do too.

The Fertile Soil of Doubt

So, why do we doubt? Sometimes it’s because of the inconsistencies of life. We experience pain, suffering, and injustice, and we wonder where God is in it all. Other times, it’s because of our own limitations and weaknesses. We’re human, after all, and we can’t always understand the mysteries of God.

Treating the Infection of Doubt

So, how do we deal with doubt when it arises? Here are a few strategies that have helped me:

  • Define your doubts: Try to pinpoint exactly what you’re struggling with. Is it the existence of God? The problem of evil? The reliability of scripture? Once you’ve identified the source of your doubt, you can begin to address it.
  • Examine your doubts: Don’t be afraid to question your doubts. Ask yourself if they’re based on facts or assumptions. Are there other perspectives or explanations that you haven’t considered?
  • Seek answers: Study the Bible, read books, talk to experts. Seek out answers to your questions, but don’t be satisfied with superficial responses. Dig deep and seek truth.
  • Doubt your doubts: Sometimes, our doubts can be unfounded or exaggerated. Learn to doubt your doubts and consider alternative explanations.

The Confidence of Faith

As I’ve navigated the dark waters of doubt, I’ve come to realize that faith is not about certainty, but confidence. I’m not 100% sure of everything, but I have a high confidence in the goodness and sovereignty of God. And that’s enough.

So, dear friend, if you’re struggling with doubt, know that you’re not alone. It’s okay to question and seek answers. But don’t let doubt consume you. Instead, let it drive you deeper into the arms of God, where you’ll find peace, comfort, and confidence in His presence.
