The Unrelenting Mercy of God
When it comes to dealing with others, we often find ourselves dwelling on their past mistakes and hurtful actions. We nurture the memory of their faults and failures, making sure they never forget what they did wrong. But God’s approach is radically different.
A God Who Doesn’t Keep Score
In Psalm 103:10, we read that God “does not deal with us according to our sins.” He doesn’t recall our past transgressions or hold them against us. Instead, He chooses to forgive and forget. This is not because our sins are insignificant or without consequence. Rather, it’s a testament to God’s unrelenting mercy and love.
The Weight of Our Sins
We often struggle to let go of the hurt caused by others. We replay the painful memories and harbor resentment, seeking justice or revenge. But God’s response is not to repay us according to our iniquities. Instead, He absorbs the weight of our sins, taking the punishment upon Himself.
A Record of Tears, Not Sins
While God does keep a record of our experiences, it’s not a ledger of our transgressions. Rather, it’s a record of our tears, our suffering, and our lamentations. He remembers our pain and uses it to stir His compassion and action on our behalf.
The Difference Between Union and Communion
It’s essential to distinguish between our eternal union with God and our experiential communion with Him. While our sins do not affect our eternal union, they can impact our daily experience of God’s presence and peace. Repeated and unrepentant sin can cloud our minds and hinder our hearts from feeling God’s affection for us.
Why God Doesn’t Deal with Us According to Our Sins
So, why does God choose not to deal with us according to our sins? The answer lies in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. God has dealt with Jesus in accordance with what our sins require, repaying Him for our iniquities. This is the foundation of God’s mercy and forgiveness towards us.
Resting in the Freedom of Forgiveness
As we grasp the depth of God’s mercy, we can rest in the freedom of forgiveness. We are not bound by our past mistakes or defined by our sins. Instead, we are liberated to live in the joy and peace of our eternal union with God.
