The Power of Surrender
When we think of Jesus, we often focus on his divinity and eternity, forgetting that during his time on earth, he did nothing on his own initiative. Instead, he surrendered to the Father’s will, listening and obeying without hesitation. This profound humility is a powerful example for us to follow.
The Spirit’s Guidance
Isaiah prophesied that the Spirit would rest upon the Messiah, bringing wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2). Jesus fulfilled this prophecy, demonstrating that his decisions were not based on human intelligence, but on his complete trust in the Father’s perfect wisdom, justice, and goodness.
Trusting in the Father’s Will
Unlike us, Jesus didn’t weigh the pros and cons or consider different perspectives to make a decision. He simply trusted the Father, knowing that his ways are higher than ours. This unwavering trust led to his perfect obedience, which in turn allows the Holy Spirit to indwell all believers who have opened their hearts to him.
Our Dependence on the Spirit
If Jesus, the Eternal Son of God, couldn’t do anything on his own, neither can we. We must recognize our own limitations and surrender to the Spirit’s guidance. The Spirit’s primary role is not to help us make decisions, but to reveal God to us, just as Jesus did.
Coming to Know God
Through the Holy Spirit, we come to know God’s will by coming to know God himself. The Spirit reveals God’s goodness, glory, and power, reminding us of Jesus’ obedience, sacrifice, and love. By understanding God’s character and commands, we are guided to do only the Father’s will.
A Prayer of Surrender
Holy God, I acknowledge that I can do nothing on my own. Thank you for sending your Spirit so that I can know you. Reveal yourself to me more and more, that I may know your will and follow it with perfect obedience. Amen.
