A Spirit of Expectation: How to Listen to God’s Voice
As I reflect on the story of Cornelius, a centurion who worshiped God and prayed regularly, I am struck by his attitude of expectation. When God sent an angel to instruct him to send for Peter, Cornelius obeyed immediately, gathering his family and friends to listen to God’s message. This spirit of expectation is something we can learn from today.
God’s Word is Alive and Active
Every day, when we read God’s word, we should come with the same expectation as Cornelius. The Bible, though written thousands of years ago, remains living and active, teaching, correcting, encouraging, comforting, and convicting us through the Holy Spirit. As Hebrews 4:12 reminds us, “the word of God is alive and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.”
Seeking God with an Open Heart
Cornelius understood that God was present in his home among the group of God-fearing, truth-seekers assembled. Whenever and wherever we seek God diligently and with open hearts, He is present. This is a powerful reminder that God is always with us, waiting to speak to us and guide us.
Surrendering Ourselves to God
Let us follow Cornelius’ example and gladly submit ourselves to God, ready to obey and eager to be molded into His likeness. As we seek God with our whole being, let us pray for the ability to listen to His voice and surrender ourselves to His will.
A Prayer of Surrender
Holy God, I surrender myself to you. I believe you speak to those who seek you. Help me to seek you with my whole being. Make me a good listener. Amen.
May we all cultivate a spirit of expectation as we seek to listen to God’s voice and follow His will.
