A Question of Love
In the midst of turmoil and pain, Jesus asks a simple yet profound question: “Do you love me?” It’s a question that cuts through the noise of our emotions and gets to the heart of our relationship with God. This is the question Jesus posed to Peter, his disciple who was struggling to come to terms with the events of the past week.
Beyond Explanation
Jesus could have taken the time to explain the circumstances surrounding his crucifixion and resurrection. He could have provided Peter with a detailed account of the events that had transpired. But instead, he chose to ask a question that would pierce the depths of Peter’s heart. “Do you love me?” It’s a question that requires a response from the deepest part of our being.
Faith in the Face of Adversity
When we’re faced with painful emotions and difficult circumstances, it’s easy to get caught up in feelings of doubt and discouragement. We may wonder why God allows certain things to happen, and we may struggle to understand his plan. But in the midst of it all, God asks us the same question he asked Peter: “Do you love me?”
A Determination to Believe
Faith is not about pretending that everything is okay when it’s not. It’s not about putting on a brave face and ignoring our emotions. Faith is about making a determination to believe that God is good, no matter what our circumstances look like. It’s about choosing to hold onto loving and obeying God, even when it’s hard.
A Declaration of Love
So, are you ready to say with me: “Father, you know that I love you.” This is not just a statement of affection; it’s a declaration of our commitment to God. It’s a statement that says, no matter what happens, we will choose to love and follow him. When we make this declaration, we’re not erasing our painful emotions, but we’re allowing love to take the steering wheel of our wills and pull us towards God.
