A New Year’s Reflection: Following God into the Unknown
As we sang in church on New Year’s Eve, I was struck by the profound lyrics of the hymn “God of Our Life.” The words, penned by Hugh T. Kerr, seemed to capture the essence of our relationship with God: trust, gratitude, and faith. But as we reached the final stanza, I couldn’t help but wonder: do we truly mean what we sing?
Looking Back, Looking Ahead
The past is behind us, with its triumphs and losses. We can’t change what’s already happened. But as we face the future, with its unknown paths and challenges, we’re reminded that our trust in God must be more than just words. We dare not simply mouth the lyrics; God hears every whisper of every song.
Following Through
As we promise to follow God through all the stanzas of our lives, we must consider our part in this relationship. His part is to never leave or forsake us, but ours is to follow, even when the path ahead is uncertain. It’s easy to sing the words, to mean them to some degree, but it’s much harder to carry the song into every moment of every day.
A Prayer for the Journey
As we embark on this new year, I pray that we would be able to carry the song of our faith into every moment, singing to God with sincerity and conviction. May we be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
May Our Words Be More Than Just a Song
As we journey into the unknown, may our words be more than just a song. May they be a reflection of our hearts, a declaration of our trust in God, and a commitment to follow Him, no matter what lies ahead.
