The Final Judgment and the New Creation
In the ultimate reckoning, all the dead, both great and small, stand before God’s throne to be judged by him. The books are opened, including the book of life, and the dead are judged according to their deeds. This judgment is not based on faith alone, but on the evidence of one’s works, which demonstrate whether they belong to God.
The Sea, Death, and Hades Yield Their Dead
The sea, representing chaos and destruction, gives up its dead, as do Death and Hades. These powers, which once terrified humanity, are now subject to God’s power. The dead are judged according to their works, and God’s judgment is impartial and fair.
The Lake of Fire and the Second Death
Death and Hades are thrown into the lake of fire, which represents eternal separation from God. This is the second death, distinct from physical death. If one’s name is not found in the book of life, they are cast into the lake of fire, where they will suffer torment forever.
The New Heaven and the New Earth
In the new creation, the old heaven and earth pass away, and a new heaven and earth are formed. The sea, which represented chaos, is no more. The new creation is a city, the holy city of Jerusalem, coming down from heaven, from God. This city is a place of beauty and joy, where God dwells with his people forever.
God’s Dwelling with Humanity
A loud voice from the throne declares that God’s dwelling is with humanity, and he will dwell with them forever. The covenant formula of the OT is now realized, and God will be the God of his people. The greatest blessing of the new creation is the presence of God with his people.
The Removal of Sorrow and Sin
In the new creation, there is no sorrow, crying, or pain. Death is defeated, and the story of the new creation is one of life, fruitfulness, and joy. God declares that he is making everything new, and his words are effective.
The Gift of Eternal Life
Those who thirst for God will receive the gift of eternal life, which comes without payment. Those who conquer and overcome will inherit the new creation as God’s sons and daughters. On the other hand, those who fail to conquer will experience the second death, eternal separation from God.
The Exclusion of Unbelievers
Unbelievers are excluded from the city due to cowardice, unfaithfulness, murder, sexual immorality, sorcery, idolatry, and lying. These sins represent a rejection of God’s lordship and a refusal to trust in him.
In the end, God’s purposes are realized, and the new creation dawns. Those who belong to God will experience the joy of his presence, while those who reject him will suffer eternal separation.
