Jesus Feels Your Pain: Finding Solidarity in Suffering

The Unwavering Solidarity of Jesus

In times of pain and struggle, our intuition often tells us that we’re alone, that Jesus is distant, and that we must get our lives together before approaching Him. But the Bible corrects this misconception. Jesus is not a detached observer; He’s a compassionate companion who understands our weaknesses and shares in our suffering.

A Depth of Felt Solidarity

The word “sympathize” in Hebrews 4:15 is a compound word that means “to suffer with.” It’s not a superficial pity but a profound sense of solidarity, like that of a parent for their child. Jesus feels our pain as His own, not because His divinity is threatened, but because His heart is drawn into our distress.

A Heart of Tender Love

How does Jesus feel about His people amid their sins and failures? The writer to the Hebrews takes us deep into the heart of Christ, revealing a love that cannot be held back when He sees His people in pain. Jesus’ human nature engages our troubles comprehensively, and His is a love that cannot be restrained.

Not Unique to Us

The reason Jesus is in such close solidarity with us is that He has journeyed on the same difficult path. He’s not just a doctor prescribing medicine; He’s a doctor who has endured the same disease. When we face relationship struggles, feelings of futility, or betrayal, Jesus sits close to us, embracing us in our pain.

Never Alone

Our tendency is to feel increasingly isolated as we sink deeper into pain. But the Bible assures us that our pain never outstrips what Jesus Himself shares in. We are never alone. That sorrow that feels so isolating was endured by Jesus in the past and is now shouldered by Him in the present.

Sin and Guilt

But what about our sins? Should we be discouraged that Jesus can’t be in solidarity with us in our guilt and shame? No, because Jesus’ sinlessness means He knows temptation better than we do. He endured all our temptations without giving in, so He truly knows the cost. Moreover, His sinlessness is our salvation, as He provides rescue from the hole of sin.

Coming to Jesus

You don’t need to unburden or collect yourself before coming to Jesus. Your very burden is what qualifies you to come. Jesus isn’t like you; His love is a cascading abundance that echoes heaven’s intense love. When you come to Christ for mercy and love, you’re going with the flow of His deepest wishes, not against them.
