As a Christian, I believe that God’s sovereignty should impact the way we watch football or any sport in several ways. Firstly, we should acknowledge that God is in control of all things, including the outcome of the game. This does not mean that we should not strive to do our best or that the outcome is predetermined, but rather that we should trust in God’s goodness and providence.
Secondly, we should thank God for the opportunity to enjoy sports and for the gifts and talents he has given to individual athletes and teams. Our enjoyment of sports should take the form of thanksgiving to God, recognizing that all good things come from him.
Thirdly, we should not get too caught up in the excitement of the game, forgetting that God’s control does not undermine human activity or the importance of fair play and good sportsmanship. We should conduct ourselves in a way that honors God, whether we are playing or watching sports.
Finally, we should recognize that God’s sovereignty does not imply that he morally approves everything that happens in sports. We should not assume that because God is in control, everything that happens is okay. Rather, we should seek to understand and apply biblical principles to our engagement with sports, discerning what is pleasing to God and what is not.
In my current project, The Miracles of Jesus: Signs of Redemption, I am exploring how Jesus’ miracles signified redemption and how they can inform our understanding of God’s sovereignty in all areas of life, including sports. By examining the biblical accounts of Jesus’ miracles, we can gain insight into how God works in the world and how we can respond to his sovereignty in our daily lives, including our engagement with sports.
