Freedom from Debt, but Not from Love
Recently, I experienced the thrill of paying off a long-standing debt, and the sense of relief was overwhelming. As I gazed at the zero balance in my account, I felt a deep satisfaction, knowing that I was finally free from that financial burden. But little did I know, my journey was far from over.
The Debt That Never Ends
That same evening, I stumbled upon a profound verse in Romans 13:8, which reads, “Owe no one anything, except to love one another.” These words struck a chord within me, and I realized that, despite settling my financial debt, I still owed a debt that would never be fully paid – the debt of love. No matter how much we give, love, or care for others, there will always be more to give, more to love, and more to care.
The Consequences of Neglecting Love
Unfortunately, many of us try to wriggle out of this debt, often with devastating consequences. We see high divorce rates, fractured families, and strained relationships between neighbors, coworkers, and even in-laws. Love is not meant to be paid in full; it’s an ongoing account that requires continuous deposits.
The Joy of Ongoing Love
I thought I had finally broken free from debt, but I soon realized that I was not debt-free at all. I have people in my life who need my love, care, and attention every day, every hour, and every minute. And so do you. We owe them love, kindness, and compassion, not just today, but always. When we feel like we’ve given enough, we must remember to put a little more on the account. Love to the fullest, but never let it be paid in full.
The Power of Unwavering Love
As the apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 13:8, “Love never fails.” It’s a debt that never expires, a bond that never breaks. So, let’s keep loving, keep caring, and keep giving, knowing that our efforts will never be in vain.
