Embracing the Unconventional Path of Praise
When we think of praise, we often associate it with feelings of joy, gratitude, and celebration. However, the concept of “sacrifice of praise” presents a paradox that challenges our conventional understanding. How can something as beautiful as praise require sacrifice?
The Disgrace of Jesus
To grasp this concept, let’s revisit the story of Jesus’ crucifixion. In Hebrews 13:11-12, we’re reminded of the shame and humiliation Jesus endured to make us holy. His sacrifice was not just about dying on the cross, but also about bearing the weight of our sin and its consequences.
Bearing the Disgrace
The author of Hebrews urges us to follow Jesus’ example, to “go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore” (Hebrews 13:13). This means acknowledging Jesus as our Lord and embracing the shame and rejection that comes with it. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that Jesus suffered so we wouldn’t have to, but that’s a misguided notion. Knowing Jesus and becoming like Him means experiencing the same kind of shame and rejection He faced.
The Apostles’ Response
Consider the apostles’ reaction when they were whipped and threatened by the religious rulers of their day. Instead of complaining or seeking revenge, they rejoiced because they were counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name (Acts 5:41). Their response was not one of bitterness, but of gratitude for being aligned with Jesus.
A Life of Open Acknowledgment
God calls us to openly acknowledge Jesus as our Lord and Messiah, even if it means facing scorn and abuse. When we admit our status as needy sinners, dependent on Jesus for salvation, we may encounter ridicule and persecution. But instead of despairing, we can give thanks to God for the privilege of being treated like Jesus. This is the sacrifice of praise – a willingness to bear the cost of following Jesus, no matter what.
A Prayer of Surrender
Heavenly Father, I acknowledge Jesus as my Lord. May my life – my actions and my words – declare this truth regardless of the consequences. Amen.
