The Power of Ordinary Faith

In a world where superheroes and charismatic leaders often take center stage, it’s refreshing to remember that God can use anyone, regardless of their background or abilities. The story of Peter and John, two unschooled and ordinary men, is a powerful reminder of this truth.

Unlikely Heroes

These two men weren’t endowed with special gifts or charisma that set them apart from the crowd. In fact, they were so ordinary that the rulers and elders of the people instinctively knew that their courage and conviction came from a higher source. It was as if they had been with Jesus himself, and this assumption was not far from the truth.

Facing Intimidation

Later, when Peter and John faced interrogation and threats from the authorities, they could have easily backed down. But instead, they responded with boldness, declaring that they couldn’t help but share what they had seen and heard. This courage was not of their own making, but rather a result of their faith in God.

A Prayer for Boldness

In the face of opposition, Peter and John turned to God in prayer. They acknowledged that their experience was a result of God’s power and will, and they asked Him to display His glory through them. They didn’t pray for deliverance from the threats or for the removal of obstacles. Instead, they asked for the boldness to speak God’s word with confidence, even in the midst of adversity.

A Model for Our Prayers

What can we learn from Peter and John’s prayer? When we feel threatened or intimidated, do we turn to God with the same boldness and confidence? Or do we ask for escape routes or easy solutions? May we learn to pray like Peter and John, asking for the overcoming power to grasp God’s love, obey His voice, and cling to Him in the midst of whatever situation we face.

A Prayer for You

Father God, thank you that you are able to give us what we need to become who we need to be in the face of our biggest challenges. Please give us the overcoming power to grasp your love, to obey your voice, and to cling to you for what is needed in the midst of whatever situation we face. Pour into us your strength and power, and may you ultimately be glorified. In Jesus’ Name! Amen.
