Reviving the Flow of Living Water

Imagine taking a refreshing drink from a crystal-clear mountain stream. When was the last time you experienced such a moment of pure delight? For some, it may be a distant memory, while others may never have had the pleasure.

As a child, I was blessed to live on a picturesque 64-acre dairy farm, complete with rolling hills and a babbling creek. Summer days were spent fishing for trout with makeshift gear, and when thirst struck, I’d cup my hands and drink directly from the stream. The water was invigorating and satisfying.

Years later, my husband and I purchased a property surrounded by a deep ravine, where fresh water springs bubbled up from the earth. We dug a shallow well to capture the water, and it became our primary source of drinking water. However, during the rainy season, fallen leaves would occasionally clog the spring, blocking the flow into the well. A simple clearing of the debris would restore the water’s flow.

A Spiritual Parallel

This experience reminds me of our spiritual lives. When we receive Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit brings new life, joy, peace, and gentleness, blessing those around us. Yet, just as the spring’s flow can be blocked by rotting leaves, our sinful acts or attitudes can hinder the stream of Living Water from flowing out of our lives.

Restoring the Flow

Fortunately, the solution is straightforward. By sincerely confessing our sin (1 John 1:9) and appropriating the fullness of His Spirit by faith (Ephesians 5:18), we can restore the flow of Living Water. This practice should become a regular part of our lives, especially when we’re tempted to engage in sinful behavior.

As someone once wisely said, “I ‘fess them as I does them, I don’t bunch them.” Let us strive to live in this manner, keeping the flow of Living Water free from obstructions.

A Prayer

Father, thank You for residing within us and being the source of the Living Water that flows out of our lives. May we always keep this flow unobstructed, allowing Your Spirit to bless others through us. Amen.
