Embracing Sanctification: A Lifelong Journey of Holiness
As followers of Christ, we are called to live a life of holiness, set apart for God’s holy use. This journey of sanctification is not just a process, but a position we are placed in at conversion. In this article, we’ll explore the multifaceted nature of sanctification and its significance in our lives.
Positional Sanctification: A New Identity
At the moment of conversion, believers are placed in a position of sanctification, set apart as holy and cleansed from sin. This new identity is rooted in the imputed righteousness of Christ, making us righteous in God’s eyes. As Paul writes, “To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 1:2).
The Spirit’s Role in Sanctification
The Holy Spirit is the agent of sanctification, working in both positional and progressive sanctification. He regenerates us, indwells us, and causes spiritual growth. The fruit of the Spirit is evidence of His work in our lives, as listed in Galatians 5:22-23. Ongoing growth occurs as we walk in the Spirit, are led by the Spirit, and keep in step with the Spirit.
Dependence on God, Not Works
Sanctification is not something we achieve through our own efforts or spiritual disciplines. Rather, it is God’s gracious work in us by His Spirit. We depend on God to do the work, and our focus should be on Him, not on the disciplines themselves. As Paul warns, “Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?” (Gal. 3).
Approaches to Sanctification
There are various approaches to sanctification, including entire sanctification, progressive sanctification, and a second blessing experience. However, a balanced understanding of sanctification can be achieved by studying Scripture inductively, without a preconceived theological system.
Holiness: An Attribute of God
Holiness is an attribute of God, and understanding this is essential to grasping our call to sanctification. God’s holiness is His very name, and it distinguishes Him from all of creation. We are called to reflect God’s holiness, and this is made possible through the work of the Holy Spirit.
A Lifelong Journey
Sanctification is a lifelong journey, not a destination. It involves a rhythm of repentance, confession, forgiveness, and walking in the Spirit by faith. We are already positionally sanctified, but ongoing cleansing from sin is still necessary. As John writes, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
Abiding in Christ
To bear fruit and live a holy life, we must abide in Christ, knowing that apart from Him, we can do nothing. Abiding doesn’t mean passivity; rather, it means responding to the Spirit’s initiative and energy. As Jesus says, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me” (John 15:4).
Persevering in Holiness
Finally, we must take seriously the call to holiness and spiritual growth. Every Christian is expected to grow into full maturity, bearing fruit and experiencing pruning from the vined
