The Beast Rising Out of the Sea
In the book of Revelation, John sees a terrifying beast rising out of the sea, summoned by the dragon on the seashore. This beast represents a powerful and ruthless empire, likely the Roman Empire, which was known for its brutality and oppression. The beast has ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads, symbolizing its authority and power.
A Parody of Christ
The beast is described as being like a leopard, with feet like a bear’s and a mouth like a lion’s. This description is reminiscent of Daniel’s vision of four beasts, each representing a different empire. The beast in Revelation is a consummation of these empires, and its characteristics are a parody of Christ’s. The beast has a mortal wound, from which it recovers, symbolizing its apparent demise and resurrection. This is a mockery of Christ’s death and resurrection, and the beast’s worship is a perversion of true worship.
The Beast’s Authority
The dragon gives the beast its power, throne, and great authority. The beast exercises totalitarian rule, causing all people to worship it and receive its mark. Those who refuse to worship the beast are put to death. The beast’s authority is demonic, and its rule is characterized by fear, intimidation, and violence.
The False Prophet
John also sees another beast, coming up from the earth. This beast is the false prophet, who claims to speak for God but actually speaks like the dragon. The false prophet exercises the authority of the first beast, compelling people to worship the beast. The false prophet performs miraculous signs, deceiving people into believing the beast is divine.
The Mark of the Beast
The false prophet enforces the power of the first beast through economic discrimination. No one can buy or sell unless they have the mark of the beast on their forehead or hand. This mark signifies devotion to the beast and is a parody of the seal of God on the foreheads of believers.
The Number of the Beast
John summons his readers to be wise and calculate the number of the beast, which is 666. This number represents humanity apart from God, symbolizing the enormity and totality of evil. The kingdom of the beast promises life and prosperity but brings death, misery, and devastation.
Perseverance and Faithfulness
In the face of such evil, believers are called to persevere and remain faithful to their Lord. They must be willing to suffer, to give their all for Christ, and to endure until the end in order to obtain the final reward. The beast may seem powerful, but its authority is limited and temporary. God reigns supreme, and his kingdom will ultimately triumph over all evil.
