Discovering God’s Will: A Matter of the Heart
As believers, we often find ourselves seeking answers to life’s big questions. But when it comes to understanding God’s will, we may be asking the wrong question. Instead of “What should I do?”, we should be asking “Who should I be?” This subtle shift in perspective can make all the difference in our journey towards sanctification.
The Problem with Focusing on Actions
When we focus solely on our actions, we risk becoming better behaved lovers of self. We may make “good choices”, but if our hearts remain unchanged, we’re still far from reflecting God’s character. Think about it: what good is it to choose the right job or spouse if we’re still consumed by selfishness or covetousness? A lost person can make “good choices”, but only a person indwelt by the Holy Spirit can make choices that glorify God.
Becoming Better People
The hope of the gospel is not just about making better choices, but about becoming better people. This is the hope that inspired John Newton to write, “I once was lost but now am found, was blind, but now I see.” It’s the hope that transforms us into the same image as Christ, from one degree of glory to another (2 Cor. 3:18).
Reflecting God’s Character
As Christians, we’re called to reflect God’s character. But what does that look like? Look to Jesus, the only human who never sinned. He’s the perfect example of what it means to be human. By studying His attributes, we can discover freedom and purpose in becoming all that God made us to be.
A Lifelong Journey
Sanctification is a lifelong process that follows no formula or schedule. It’s a journey of growth, sustained by God’s grace. As we point in the right direction, we’ll become more like our Savior. It’s a journey worth taking, one that will transform us into the people we were meant to be.
