The Unlikely Friendship: Understanding Our Relationship with God

As Christians, we often refer to Jesus as our friend, but what does this really mean? It’s essential to recognize that our friendship with God is not a relationship between equals. Jesus is, and always will be, our king. However, He has extended an extraordinary invitation to us – to be His friends.

From Servants to Friends

In John 15:15, Jesus says, “No longer do I call you servants, but I have called you friends.” This statement marks a significant shift in our understanding of our relationship with God. As friends, we are welcome in God’s presence anytime, not just when we have something to do or offer. We are told why, not just what to do. We share in the joy and fellowship of God’s table, rather than just serving Him.

Living in Friendship with God

So, what does it look like to live in friendship with God? First, we must be befriended by God through faith and repentance. We start as enemies of God, but through the cross of Christ, we become His friends. Second, we communicate with God through prayer and Bible-reading, which are not just spiritual disciplines but ways to relate to Him as a friend. Finally, we live life with a great sense of privilege, knowing that Jesus wants us to think of ourselves as His friends, not just servants.

A Life of Privilege

As friends of God, we never have to face any moment alone, unknown, or misunderstood. We can walk in friendship with God throughout our day, meditating on Scripture and speaking with Him in prayer. This understanding of our relationship with God transforms our lives, filling us with a sense of purpose and belonging.

Radical Ordinary Hospitality

Our friendship with God also compels us to extend radical, ordinary hospitality to others. By welcoming others into our homes and lives, we can bring the gospel to our lost friends and neighbors. This kind of hospitality requires intentionality and skill, but it can lead to profound relationships and opportunities for sharing the love of Christ.

Assured of Christ’s Love

Ultimately, our friendship with God is rooted in Christ’s unwavering love for us. We can be assured of His love because He gave His life to save us. He is a trustworthy friend who will never fail us. As we cultivate deeper relationships with God and others, we experience the transformative power of true friendship.
