The Art of Soul Quiet: Embracing Stillness in a World of Noise

As a self-proclaimed doer, I’ve always found it challenging to slow down and quiet my mind. In a world that values productivity and constant motion, the idea of simply being can feel like a luxury we can’t afford. But what if I told you that embracing stillness is the key to unlocking true peace and joy?

The Illusion of Control

We’re wired to be fixers, taking matters into our own hands whenever life gets tough. We’re convinced that we can solve our problems on our own, without needing anyone else’s help. But this mentality can lead us down a path of exhaustion and burnout. We’re not designed to be our own saviors; we need a Rescuer who can guide us through life’s turbulent waters.

The Power of Waiting

Waiting is often seen as a sign of laziness or inaction. But what if waiting was actually a powerful act of surrender? By waiting on God, we’re acknowledging that we can’t do it all on our own and that we need His guidance and wisdom. Waiting takes courage, perseverance, and intentionality – but the rewards are well worth it.

Discovering Soul Quiet

Years ago, I stumbled upon a soul quiet practice called Contemplative Prayer, also known as Lectio Divina. This ancient practice has been a game-changer for me, helping me to quiet my soul and tune into God’s whispers. Here’s how it works:

  • Read a short passage of Scripture aloud, then take a few minutes to simply listen and be still.
  • Reflect on the passage: What resonates with me today?
  • Respond to God’s invitation: What is He calling me to do today?
  • Rest in His presence, asking nothing and simply being.
  • Write down any insights or revelations that come to you.

A Call to Soul Quiet

God is calling us to a life of soul quiet, where we rest in His presence and wait on Him to rescue us. It’s a way of living that’s marked by peace, joy, and life – even in the midst of chaos. I encourage you to start your own soul quiet practice today, using Philippians 4:6-7 as your guide. As you embark on this journey, remember that soul quiet is a choice – one that requires intentionality, perseverance, and a willingness to let go of control. But the rewards are well worth it.
