The Heart of a Christian Husband
In the grand tapestry of marriage, one word stands out as the defining characteristic of a Christian husband: love. But what does this word truly mean? In Ephesians 5:25, Paul writes, “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” This verse sets the tone for a deeper exploration of love, one that goes beyond mere sentimentality.
Nourishing and Cherishing
In verse 29, Paul clarifies the meaning of love by introducing two key words: nourish and cherish. These words convey a sense of wholehearted involvement, taking the husband beyond just providing for his wife’s physical needs. To nourish means “to develop, to nurture, to lift up,” implying a sense of dignifying purpose and care. A loving Christian husband cares deeply about his wife’s life, ensuring it moves in a desirable direction, just as Christ nourishes the church.
A Life of Purpose
Marriage to a Christlike husband is the opposite of a dead-end life. A woman married to a nourishing man can look back on her life with gratitude, knowing her husband thought of her and cared about her well-being. This is what it means to nourish one’s wife – to open up her life to new possibilities and purposes.
Warming the Heart
The word cherish goes even deeper emotionally, conveying a sense of comfort, warmth, and softening. When a woman is married to a lovingly Christlike man who cherishes her, she feels valued and held dear above all others. Her husband delights in her, prizes her, and makes her feel seen and loved. This is what it means to cherish one’s wife – to warm her heart with a deep and abiding love.
A Grand Display of the Gospel
By exploring the depths of love, we gain a richer understanding of marriage as a grand display of the gospel. This vision of marriage, rooted in Scripture, offers hope for our marriages today. As we strive to love our spouses with the same selfless love that Christ showed the church, we become living examples of the transformative power of the gospel.
