The High Calling of Motherhood
As we consider the role of motherhood, we are reminded that it is a sacred calling with eternal significance. From the very beginning, God designed women to be nurturing and life-giving, reflecting the character of our Creator. In this article, we will explore the high calling of motherhood and its connection to the Great Commission.
Nurturing Life in a Broken World
We live in a world marred by sin and brokenness, where the beauty of motherhood can often be obscured by the challenges and hardships that come with it. However, as Christian mothers, we are called to nurture life in the face of death, pointing our children to Christ, their shelter in the storm. We do this by living out God’s story of redemption and offering the message of the gospel to those around us.
Beyond Biological Birth
Motherhood is not limited to biological birth alone. Adoptive mothers, fostering mothers, and disciple-making women all play a vital role in nurturing and caring for others. Whether we have zero biological children or twelve, our opportunities to “mother” others in the faith are overwhelming. We must recognize that the nurturing work of motherhood is not constrained to biological birth alone.
Sufficiency in Christ
As mothers, we often feel overwhelmed and inadequate, but our sufficiency comes from Christ, through his gospel, to the praise of his glorious grace. We teach our children to sing, “We are weak, but he is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me,” and we live out those truths. Our prayerful reliance on Christ shows the world that he is the one who is doing the work, so he gets the glory.
Eternal Perspective
As we go about our daily work as mothers, we must keep an eternal perspective. History is going somewhere, and there is an appointed day for the end of this age. Motherhood is not eternal, Christ is. All of the scurrying about that we do in our daily work is but a fraction of the urgency that hangs over that day. Soon, the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father. What a day of rejoicing this will be for those from every tribe, tongue, and people group who eagerly wait for Christ’s return!
A Fresh Biblical Perspective
In her book, Gloria Furman gives moms a fresh, biblical perspective on their calling to raise and nurture children, helping them live out God’s story of redemption as they offer the message of the gospel to those around them. As we consider the high calling of motherhood, may we be encouraged to point our children to Christ, their shelter in the storm, and may we live out God’s story of redemption in our daily lives.
