Raising Bible-Literate Kids: A Guide to Navigating Scripture

Laying the Foundation: Teaching Children to Navigate the Bible

As Christians, we recognize the importance of introducing children to the Bible from a young age. In fact, Donald Whitney, author of the foreword to Exploring the Bible: A Bible Reading Plan for Kids, credits his early exposure to daily Bible reading as one of the greatest blessings in his life.

A Little Intentionality Goes a Long Way

With a little guidance and planning, adults can help build a foundation of biblical literacy in children. This is crucial, as Whitney notes that without direction, children may struggle to read and understand the Bible on their own. To address this need, two Scripture reading plans have been adapted from the ESV Kid’s Thinline Bible.

Through the Bible in 20 Days: A First Exposure

The first plan, designed for ages 8-10, provides a gentle introduction to regular Bible reading. This 20-day plan is perfect for children who are new to reading the Bible and need a structured approach. Through the Bible in 60 Days: Building on the Foundation

For older children (ages 11-13), the second plan offers a more in-depth exploration of the Bible. This 60-day plan builds on the foundational chapters introduced in the 20-day plan, with most readings being new and more challenging. As with the first plan, this devotional can be accessed online or via daily email.
