A Pastor’s Triumph Over Adversity
On September 13, 1541, John Calvin returned to Geneva, Switzerland, after a three-year absence. His previous tenure as pastor had ended in controversy and rioting, but this time, he was welcomed back with open arms. What had changed?
The Road to Exile
In 1537, Calvin and his colleague, Guillaume Farel, had fallen out with Geneva’s city council over issues of church governance and the use of unleavened bread in Communion. When they refused to celebrate Communion on Easter Sunday, a riot broke out, and the duo was judged at fault by a Swiss synod. Farel left for Neuchâtel, while Calvin was taken under the wing of Martin Bucer in Strasbourg.
A Time of Growth
During his time in Strasbourg, Calvin developed his passion for Psalm-singing and frequent Communion. He wrote his Romans commentary and represented Strasbourg at conferences seeking to heal ecclesiastical divisions. He also penned the second edition of his Institutes, transforming it from a catechetical tool into a comprehensive theological work.
A Call to Return
Meanwhile, Geneva was plagued by internal quarrels and meager church attendance. When Cardinal Sadoleto attempted to draw Geneva back into the Roman fold, Calvin was asked to draft a reply. Though he initially refused to return to Geneva, he eventually relented, convinced that God was calling him back.
Lessons Learned
Calvin’s experiences taught him valuable lessons. Firstly, he learned to prioritize and compromise, recognizing that not all issues were equally important. Secondly, he saw how God used apparent failures to shape him into a more effective pastor. Finally, he came to trust in the power of God’s Word, rather than relying solely on his own abilities.
A Legacy of Faith
Calvin’s return to Geneva marked a new chapter in his ministry, one characterized by humility, compassion, and a deep trust in God’s sovereignty. His legacy continues to inspire and challenge Christians today, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, God can bring triumph and growth.
