Beyond Physical Needs: Serving Others in Spiritual Warfare

Serving Others: A Call to Spiritual Warfare

When someone in your life is struggling, it’s easy to focus on their physical needs. But as you tend to their outward needs, don’t forget about the unseen spiritual battle raging within. Your friend’s deepest problem is the same as yours: a desperate need for reconciliation with God.

The Unseen Need

We were all created for unbroken fellowship with God, but sin separates us from Him. Our only hope is Jesus and His cross. As you serve others, remember that you’re not just meeting physical needs; you’re engaging in a spiritual war. The world won’t help you stay aware of this reality. In fact, Satan’s goal is to distract you and keep you from recognizing your need for God.

A Stewardship of Grace

You may feel like you’re just refilling medication or writing a note of encouragement, but your actions are part of a larger spiritual battle. You’ve been called to serve others with the strength God supplies, so that Christ gets the glory. Don’t be fooled by people who say, “I couldn’t do what you do.” The difference between your ministry and theirs isn’t about competency; it’s about God’s call and gifting.

Using Your Gifts to Serve

As Peter writes, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Pet. 4:10). You’ve been given a unique gift to serve others. Don’t rely on spiritual gifts inventories or self-discovery books to determine your role. Instead, look to Jesus, who equips you with everything you need to serve Him.

Assurance in God’s Call

When others ask, “How do you do it?” remember that God called and equipped you for this task. He will give you everything you need to serve Him, so that He may be glorified through Jesus Christ. You serve with joy through the same means by which you were saved: by grace through faith.

No Exceptions

In all circumstances, in every dark valley, in every moment, God’s glory shines through your service. There are no exceptions. As you serve others, assure yourself with this truth: since God called you to serve, He will give you everything you need to bring Him glory.
