A New Chapter for the English Standard Version
In 2016, a promise was made to keep the text of the English Standard Version (ESV) Bible unchanged in all future editions. The intention behind this decision was to create a stable and standard text that would serve Christians worldwide for generations to come. However, after careful consideration, it has become clear that this decision was misguided.
A Change of Heart
The goal of creating a permanent text was well-intentioned, but it has been realized that this approach is not the best way to serve the needs of readers. The ESV’s publishers have come to understand that biblical scholarship is an ongoing process, with new discoveries and changes in the English language requiring periodic updates to the text.
A New Approach
Rather than establishing a permanent text, the ESV’s publishers will now allow for infrequent and minimal updates to reflect the latest advancements in biblical scholarship. This approach will ensure that the ESV remains faithful to Scripture while also acknowledging the realities of language and scholarship.
A Sacred Trust
The publication of the Bible is a sacred trust and a privilege that requires great care and reverence. The ESV’s publishers are committed to stewarding this calling with the utmost respect and dependence on God’s guidance. As stated in the Preface to the ESV Bible, “We know that no Bible translation is perfect; but we also know that God uses imperfect and inadequate things to his honor and praise.”
A Commitment to Excellence
The ESV’s publishers are dedicated to producing a high-quality Bible that serves the needs of readers. With a deep sense of responsibility and gratitude, they offer their work to God and to His people, praying that it may prove useful and bring glory to God alone.
A Bright Future
As the ESV enters a new chapter, its publishers remain committed to serving future generations with a stable and reliable text. With a renewed sense of purpose and a willingness to adapt to changing scholarship, the ESV is poised to continue its legacy as a trusted and beloved Bible translation.
