The Power of Retelling Our Story
We’ve all heard the saying, “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” But what if I told you that retelling our story – both individually and collectively – has the power to shape us, inspire hope, and transform our lives?
In Ephesians 1:3-14, Paul shares a rich and breathless narrative that spans past, present, and future. It’s a story of love, redemption, and forgiveness that echoes through the ages. At its core, this story reminds us that we are chosen, adopted, and loved by God.
A Story of Love and Redemption
But what does this story mean for those who have experienced pain, rejection, or loss? Does it minimize their struggles? Absolutely not. Instead, it provides a counterbalance to their past, offering a narrative of love, grace, and belonging that declares, “Evil and misery will not win.”
As we retell this story, we gather more details of the blessings we have in Jesus. We remember that He pursued us, loved us, and adopted us into His royal family. This reality transforms our lives, giving us a renewed sense of purpose and identity.
Forgiveness and Redemption
God’s persistent love through the ages moves to redemption and forgiveness of sins in the present. In Jesus, we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace. This forgiveness is not remote or abstract; it’s a tangible reality that changes everything.
Hope for the Future
A good story ends well, and God’s master story is no exception. It’s a narrative of hope that inspires us to look beyond the present moment. In Jesus, we have a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in heaven and on earth. This hope strengthens us in the hardships and drudgeries of everyday life, giving us the endurance we need to persevere.
Participating in God’s Plans
As we come to Jesus, life is suddenly jammed with purpose. We participate in God’s reclamation project, echoing His justice, beauty, reconciliation, and mercy in simple acts of love. Everything done because of Jesus contributes to these final purposes, and death does not diminish them.
Retelling Our Story
So why bother retelling our story? Because it has the power to shape us, inspire hope, and transform our lives. As we remember and retell our story, we grow in confidence that all the promises God makes have already been yes in Jesus. This is the story we must tell – a story of love, redemption, forgiveness, and hope that echoes through the ages.
