The Gift of Gratitude: Unlocking the Secret to a Deeper Relationship with God
As creatures, we are wired to receive. Our very existence is a gift from God, and every breath we take, every moment we experience, is a testament to His generosity. But how often do we stop to consider the magnitude of God’s gifts? How often do we pause to give thanks for the blessings that fill our lives?
A Life of Reception
To be a creature is to be a receiver. We receive life, breath, and everything from God. He opens His hand and satisfies our desires. He gives us comfort, grace, and power through the Holy Spirit. And yet, so often we take these gifts for granted. We forget that every good thing comes from above, and that our very existence is a gift from God.
The Proper Response
So what is the proper response to an abundance of gifts? Gratitude. Gratitude is the posture of the soul that most readily increases receptivity. It demands humility, acknowledging our dependence on God and our delight in His goodness. When we give thanks, we open ourselves up to receive more from God. We begin to see the world in a new light, as a place of wonder and awe.
Practicing Gratitude
So how can we cultivate gratitude in our daily lives? Start by being specific. Give thanks for the little things, like a beautiful sunset or a warm cup of coffee. Give thanks for the people in your life, like a supportive spouse or a loving friend. And give thanks for the big things, like salvation and eternal life.
A Life of Generosity
But gratitude is not just about receiving; it’s also about giving. When we are grateful for what we have, we are more likely to be generous with others. We begin to see that everything we have is a gift from God, and that we are stewards of those gifts. So let us be generous with our time, talent, and treasure. Let us spread a passion for God’s supremacy in all things.
In the Midst of Loss
But what about when we’re facing loss or hardship? How can we be grateful in the midst of pain? It’s not easy, but it’s possible. When we press into God, even in the midst of loss, we find that He is our only comfort. He is present in ways we cannot fathom. So don’t detach; press in. Give thanks for what you have, even if it’s just the presence of God.
The Secret to Facing Plenty and Hunger
May the Father of lights, who knows how to give good gifts to His children, teach us the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. May He grant us the grace to do all good things, receive all good things, lose all good things, and endure all hard things through Christ, who gives us strength.
