Effective Evangelism: 7 Key Principles from Acts 8
The book of Acts serves as a playbook for the church on how to spread the gospel. In Acts 8, we find the story of Philip the Evangelist, who preached the gospel in Samaria and to an Ethiopian eunuch. From this chapter, we can glean seven important principles for sharing our faith with others.
1. Seize the Moment
When persecution scattered the early disciples, they didn’t let their circumstances hinder them. Instead, they seized the moment to evangelize, even in the midst of personal stress (Acts 8:4). We too can look for opportunities to share the gospel, even in difficult situations.
2. Combine Words and Deeds
Philip’s ministry in Samaria consisted of both preaching the gospel and performing miracles (Acts 8:5-7). We can follow his example by combining our words with deeds, such as serving others and demonstrating God’s love in practical ways.
3. Contextualize Your Message
Philip adapted his approach to different contexts. In Samaria, he proclaimed the gospel publicly, while with the Ethiopian eunuch, he had a one-on-one conversation (Acts 8:5-9, 26-40). We should be willing to adjust our approach to fit different situations and audiences.
4. Ask Good Questions
Philip asked the Ethiopian eunuch a question, which led to a deeper conversation about the gospel (Acts 8:30). Asking good questions can engage people, provoke thinking, and invite response.
5. Use Scripture
Philip used the Bible to explain the gospel to the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:32-35). We should be prepared to use Scripture to share the gospel and demonstrate its relevance to people’s lives.
6. Keep Christ Central
Philip’s focus was on introducing people to Jesus, not just promoting a particular church or theology (Acts 8:5, 35). We should keep Christ at the center of our evangelism, seeking to introduce people to a Person, not just a system of beliefs.
7. Trust God’s Spirit
The Holy Spirit played a key role in Philip’s evangelism, guiding him to the Ethiopian eunuch and empowering him to share the gospel (Acts 8:29, 39). We should trust God’s Spirit to work in people’s lives, even when we can’t see or predict the outcome.
By applying these seven principles from Acts 8, we can become more effective in sharing our faith with others and fulfilling the Great Commission.
