Breaking Down the Walls of Hatred and Anger
The history of humanity is marred by unimaginable atrocities committed in the name of ethnic, tribal, and racial animosities. From the Armenian genocide to the Holocaust, the Soviet Gulag, and the Rwandan massacres, the list of horrors goes on. However, the gospel of Jesus offers a powerful antidote to hatred and anger.
The Power of Forgiveness and Love
The apostle Paul writes, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Eph. 4:32). Our ability to forgive and love others is rooted in our own experience of being forgiven and loved by God. As we recognize our own sinfulness and the depth of God’s mercy towards us, we are empowered to extend that same mercy to others.
The Gospel’s Double Message
On one hand, the gospel assures us that all wrongs will be punished justly, either through the cross or in hell. This frees us from the need to take matters into our own hands and exact vengeance. On the other hand, the gospel commands us to love our enemies and treat them with kindness, just as God has treated us.
A New Bloodline
Through Christ’s blood, our racial and ethnic identities become secondary to our common identity as people of God. This new bloodline is not based on superiority or privilege but on our shared humanity and our equal status as children of God.
Forgiveness and Justice
Forgiveness does not mean that perpetrators get away with their abuses and injustices. Rather, it means that we trust God to mete out justice in His own time and way. If offenders come to faith in Christ, their sins will be covered by His blood. If not, they will face the consequences of their actions.
A Life of Love and Forgiveness
Living a life of love and forgiveness is not naive or foolish. It is a life that recognizes the destructive power of hatred and anger and chooses instead to trust in God’s mercy and vengeance. This approach has the potential to transform the world of race and ethnicity in ways we cannot imagine.
The Possibilities of Reconciliation and Harmony
When the work of Christ replaces hatred with love, anger with patience, and blaming with forgiving, the possibilities for reconciliation and harmony are endless. This is not a surrender of our passion for justice but a recognition that true justice can only be achieved through the power of the gospel.
