Finding Strength in Suffering
As followers of Christ, we are guaranteed to face trouble in this world. However, with God’s power and presence in our lives, we are called to endure and shine the light of Christ in a dark world.
God’s Unwavering Love
In Romans 8:35-39, Paul asks, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” He lists various challenges that may come our way, including tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and sword. Yet, he confidently declares that in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Christ who loved us. Nothing can ever sever us from God’s love in Christ Jesus.
Peace in the Midst of Suffering
Jesus promised his disciples that they would have tribulation in the world, but they could have peace in him because he had overcome the world (John 16:33). As we face hardships, we can find peace in our fellowship with Christ.
Enduring Hardship
Paul commended himself and his ministry to the Corinthians by highlighting his endurance in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, and hunger (2 Corinthians 6:4-5). He demonstrated that the glory of the gospel shines forth from a Christian’s life in the way they respond to suffering and opposition.
Spiritual Weapons
As servants of God, we are equipped with spiritual weapons to face any situation. In 2 Corinthians 6:7, Paul mentions the “weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left.” These spiritual tools enable us to endure and overcome adversity.
Fearless Faith
In 2 Timothy 1:7, Paul reminds us that God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power, love, and self-control. We are called to share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling.
Trials and Tribulations
James 1:2-4 encourages us to count it all joy when we meet trials of various kinds. These tests of faith produce steadfastness, leading to perfection and completeness. We can resist the devil, firm in our faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by our brothers and sisters throughout the world (1 Peter 5:9).
God’s Sovereignty
Psalm 34:17-19 reminds us that the Lord hears and delivers us out of all our troubles. He is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. We can trust in his sovereignty and goodness, even in the midst of suffering.
Running with Endurance
Hebrews 12:1-2 exhorts us to run with endurance the race set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. He endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. We can draw strength from his example as we face our own challenges.
As we navigate the trials and tribulations of this world, may we find comfort in God’s unwav
