The Joy of Calling God “Father”
Imagine being able to call the all-powerful, all-knowing God of the universe “Father.” It’s a privilege that’s hard to wrap our minds around, yet it’s a reality that’s available to every Christian. In Galatians 4:6, we read that the Spirit cries out, “Abba, Father,” giving us the confidence to address God in this intimate way.
A Special Relationship
For those who have adopted children, there’s a special moment when their child starts calling them “Mom” or “Dad.” It’s a sign that the child feels comfortable and loved, and it brings great joy to the parents. Similarly, when we call God “Father,” it’s a sign that we’ve come to know Him as our loving parent. We’re no longer just servants trying to do the right thing; we’re children who are loved and accepted.
The Spirit’s Assurance
So, how can we be sure that God is our Father? The Spirit assures us of this truth. As John Calvin wrote, “With what confidence would anyone address God as ‘Father’… unless we had been adopted as children of grace in Christ?” The Spirit witnesses to our adoption, allowing us to cry out to God with confidence.
A Cry of Need
But “Abba, Father” is not just a term of endearment; it’s also a cry of need. When we’re struggling or hurting, we can run to God as our Father, knowing that He cares for us. Just as children run to their parents when they’re scared or hurt, we can run to God, trusting that He will comfort and guide us.
Inheriting God’s Love
As children of God, we’re not just recipients of His love; we’re also heirs of His glory. We inherit God’s love and joy, which is far greater than anything we could ever imagine. As Paul wrote, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).
Living as Children of God
So, how can we enjoy God’s love and live as His children? By believing that He loves us as He loves His Son. By trusting in His goodness and provision. By crying out to Him in times of need. And by living as though we’re already home with Him, surrounded by His love and glory.
A Joy That’s Unshakeable
This joy is not something that can be taken away from us. It’s not dependent on our circumstances or our performance. It’s a joy that’s rooted in God’s love for us, and it’s unshakeable. Even in the midst of suffering or pain, we can know that God is still our Abba, Father, and that He is working everything out for our good.
