Embracing the Reality of Death
Death is an uncomfortable topic that many people avoid discussing in public. However, it’s an inevitable part of life that we’ll all face eventually. The question is, how will we cope with death when our time comes?
Finding Comfort in Christ
As Christians, we believe that Jesus is alive and that knowing him as Savior, Lord, and Friend provides a way through all of life’s challenges, including death. Jesus has experienced death himself, which enables him to support us as we face it. He can carry us through the transition to eternal life, where he now resides.
The Power of Christ over Death
Without Christ, death is a terrifying prospect. But with him, the “sting” of death is removed, and its power to hurt us is lost. This is the victory that Christians have over death and the fear it brings.
The Significance of Jesus’ Descent into Hades
The Apostles’ Creed declares that Jesus “descended into hell,” which is often misunderstood. Originally, “hell” referred to the place of the departed, equivalent to the Greek Hades and Hebrew Sheol. Jesus entered this realm, not the state of final retribution for the godless, known as Gehenna. His descent into Hades signifies that he truly died and rose from a genuine death, not a simulated one.
Facing Death with Confidence
Jesus’ entry into Hades is crucial for us because it means we won’t face death alone. He has been there before us and will see us through. As we confront death, we can do so with confidence, knowing that Jesus will be with us every step of the way.
What Jesus Did in Hades
Scripture tells us that Jesus made Hades into paradise for the penitent thief and presumably for all others who died trusting him during his earthly ministry. He also perfected the spirits of Old Testament believers, bringing them out of the gloom of Sheol into the paradise experience. Additionally, Jesus made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits who had rebelled in antediluvian times.
The Hope of Eternal Life
While Jesus’ entry into Hades is significant, it’s not the primary reason for our hope. Rather, it’s the fact that he has been there before us and will see us through that gives us confidence in the face of death. As we look to eternal life, we can do so with the assurance that Jesus will be with us every step of the way.
Conclusion
Death is an inevitable reality, but with Christ, we can face it with confidence. Jesus’ entry into Hades signifies that he truly died and rose from a genuine death, and his presence with us in death gives us hope for eternal life. As we confront death, we can do so with the assurance that Jesus will be with us every step of the way.
