Defending the Bible in a Skeptical World

As Christians, we’re often asked to explain why we believe the Bible is true. But how do we respond to those who don’t share our faith? Can we provide convincing reasons for trusting the Bible, or do we simply rely on blind faith?

The Challenge of Defending the Bible

In today’s society, many people view Christianity as irrational and outdated. They may see the Bible as a collection of myths and legends, rather than a reliable source of truth. As a result, Christians are often on the defensive, trying to justify their beliefs to a skeptical world.

A New Approach

But what if we could turn the tables? Instead of just defending our faith, what if we could present a compelling case for the trustworthiness of the Bible? This approach requires us to be prepared to give reasons for our hope, as the apostle Peter instructed (1 Peter 3:15).

Building a Case for the Bible

So, how do we build a case for the Bible? Here are four key strategies:

1. Start with common ground: Instead of beginning with Christian presuppositions, start with the beliefs that most people share. This helps to establish a connection with your audience and builds trust.
2. Use reason and evidence: Present historical and theological arguments that demonstrate the reliability of the Bible. This can include archaeological evidence, manuscript accuracy, and the coherence of the biblical narrative.
3. Confront objections: Anticipate common objections to the Bible and be prepared to address them. This shows that you’ve thoughtfully considered alternative perspectives and strengthens your case.
4. Focus on Jesus: Ultimately, the truth of the Bible rests on the identity and authority of Jesus. Emphasize the significance of his life, death, and resurrection, and how these events validate the Bible’s message.

The Resurrection: The Key to It All

The resurrection of Jesus is the linchpin of the Christian faith. If Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, then the Bible’s claims are empty. But if he did, then the implications are profound. The resurrection validates Jesus’ teachings, including his endorsement of the Old Testament and authorization of the New Testament.

In a world increasingly hostile to Christianity, it’s crucial that we’re prepared to give reasons for our hope.
