The Power of the Resurrection
As we approach the Easter season, it’s essential to reflect on the significance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Philippians 3:7-11, the Apostle Paul writes about the surpassing worth of knowing Christ and the power of his resurrection. But what does it mean to know Christ, and how can we experience the power of his resurrection in our lives?
Beyond Intellectual Assent
It’s possible to believe in the historical fact of Jesus’ resurrection without experiencing its transformative power. A minister once said, “The purpose and personality of Jesus continue, so that today he is a risen and living presence and possibility.” However, if Jesus is not truly alive, we can only know him as an example, not as a living force who can intervene in our lives.
A Form of Religion Without Power
On the other hand, it’s possible to be orthodox in our beliefs about the resurrection without experiencing its power. If we’ve never had a profound personal experience of spiritual resurrection, we may have a form of religion without power. The resurrection is both a fact to be believed and an experience to connect with.
Experiencing the Power of the Resurrection
So, how can we experience the power of the resurrection? Paul writes that he wants to know Christ and the power of his resurrection. This means more than just intellectual assent; it means having a personal relationship with Jesus and experiencing the supernatural character growth that comes from knowing him.
Resembling Jesus
To know the power of the resurrection is to resemble Jesus. It means having the same life energy that raised Jesus from the dead operating in our lives. This is not just about relationship; it’s about supernatural transformation.
From Deadness to Life
Look at the deadness in your life. Look at the areas where you feel stuck or powerless. How can these areas be transformed? The answer is that the dead stuff gets taken over by the Spirit of God. As we receive Jesus as Savior and Lord, the power of the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, bringing transformation and growth.
Sharing in His Sufferings
But what about sharing in Jesus’ sufferings? This may seem counterintuitive, but it’s a natural consequence of resembling Jesus. When we turn the other cheek, love unlovable people, and always tell the truth, we may face opposition and persecution. However, this is not a reason to shy away from following Jesus; it’s a sign that we’re on the right path.
The Beauty of Shared Suffering
As Joni Eareckson Tada writes, “God delights in identifying with us in our suffering. He feels the sting in his chest when you hurt. He takes it personally.” When we share in Jesus’ sufferings, we experience a deeper level of intimacy with him and a greater appreciation for the beauty of shared suffering.
Conclusion
The power of the resurrection is not just a historical event; it’s a present reality that can transform our lives. As we reflect on the significance of the resurrection, let’s move beyond intellectual assent and experience the supernatural character growth that comes from knowing Jesus. May we resemble Jesus and share in his sufferings, knowing that this is the path to true life and transformation.
