Embracing Death with Dignity and Faith
As a Christian, I’ve often wondered what it means to die well. In a culture that frequently views death as an enemy to be fought, I believe it’s essential to reexamine our perspective on mortality. When we face the end of life, it can be tempting to become self-centered and focused on our own desires. However, as followers of Christ, we’re called to reflect the gospel in every aspect of our lives, including our death.
Accepting Death as a Part of Life
The gospel tells us that death has been defeated, and it’s no longer an enemy to be feared. This truth was beautifully illustrated in the story of a friend who was in his eighties and struggling with a bad heart and diabetes. Despite his poor health, he made it clear that he didn’t want to undergo any further surgery. When his condition took a turn for the worse, he was hospitalized, and I had the opportunity to visit him.
A Powerful Example of Dying with Dignity
As I spoke with my friend, I shared my conviction that the Lord was going to take him home soon. He listened intently, and then he made three requests: he wanted his family to be with him, he desired a piece of chocolate cake with chocolate icing, and he asked for a cup of real coffee. We were able to grant all three of his wishes, and as he enjoyed his cake and coffee, he was surrounded by his loved ones. Within 15 minutes, he passed away, resting in the presence of the Lord. This experience taught me that dying can be a beautiful and peaceful process when we trust in God.
A Biblical Perspective on Death
As Christians, we’re not immune to the pain and sorrow that comes with losing someone we love. However, we can find comfort in the Bible’s assurance that we already have eternal life here on earth, and that cannot be interrupted. In the face of death, we’re reminded that our hope is not in this life alone but in the resurrection and the promise of eternal life with God.
Finding Hope and Peace in the Face of Death
In his book, Finishing Well to the Glory of God, John Dunlop, MD, shares his insights on how to approach death with dignity and faith. As someone who has practiced geriatric medicine for over 30 years, Dunlop offers a unique perspective on the importance of accepting death as a part of life. By embracing this reality, we can find peace and hope, even in the midst of sorrow and loss.
A Call to Reflect the Gospel in Our Death
As we consider our own mortality, let’s remember that our death can be a powerful testimony to the gospel. By trusting in God and accepting death with dignity, we can reflect the hope and peace that comes from knowing Jesus. May our lives, and our deaths, be a testament to the glory of God.
