A Call to Unity: Pursuing Racial Reconciliation in the Church
As Christians, we envision a future where people from every tribe, nation, and tongue stand together before our resurrected Savior. But does our church reflect this reality? Are we a beacon of hope and unity in a world divided along racial lines?
The Biblical Mandate for Unity
The Bible is clear: God’s plan for redemption involves saving a multiethnic people. Jesus died to tear down the walls of separation and create one new man. The church in Antioch, where the name “Christian” originated, was a shining example of ethnic diversity and unity.
A Framework for Pursuing Racial Reconciliation
So, where do we start? How can we pursue racial reconciliation in our churches? Here are five steps:
- Love: Our union with Christ compels us to love one another. This supernatural affection is what Jesus said would communicate that we really are his disciples.
- Listen: We must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Listening with humility and self-control is essential for making progress toward reconciliation.
- Lament: Lament is a powerful tool for expressing empathy and solidarity with those who suffer. It affirms our unity and appeals to God for help.
- Learn: Reconciliation requires learning from one another. We must be willing to ask questions, work through disagreements, and discover new concepts and historical realities.
- Leverage: Finally, we must take action. We must use our newfound understanding to create new relationships, speak up against injustice, and practice intentional hospitality.
A Vision for the Future
Racial reconciliation is not just a pipe dream; it’s a biblical imperative. We shouldn’t have to wait until heaven to experience unity and harmony. By pursuing these five steps, we can create a church that reflects the beauty and diversity of God’s kingdom.
A Word of Encouragement
Pursuing racial reconciliation is not easy. It requires courage, humility, and perseverance. But the reward is worth it: a church that shines like a beacon of hope in a world torn apart by division and strife. Let us strive to create a community that reflects the gospel’s power to unite and transform.
