Refocusing on the True Meaning of Christmas: A Guide for Busy Parents

Finding Peace in the Chaos of Christmas

Dear fellow parents,

Are you tired of feeling like you’re just going through the motions of the holiday season? Are you exhausted from trying to keep up with the never-ending list of tasks, parties, and presents? You’re not alone.

As a mother of four, I’ve been there too. I used to love Christmas, but after having kids, it started to feel like just another thing to add to my already overwhelming to-do list. I’d find myself rushing from one thing to the next, checking off boxes, but never really feeling like I was experiencing the true meaning of the season.

The Goal of the Season

But then I realized that I had lost sight of what’s truly important. The goal of the Christmas season shouldn’t be to get everything done on our lists, but to focus our hearts on Christ. If we miss Him, we’ve missed everything.

So, how can we refocus our attention on what really matters? Here are a few “holiday resets” that have helped me:

  • Clear Your Calendar: Take a close look at your schedule and see what can be postponed or eliminated. Remember, the goal is to treasure Christ above all else.
  • Schedule Time for What Matters: Make time for activities that drive you to remember Christ, such as serving, reading Scripture, and praying together as a family.
  • Start Small: Don’t feel like you need to do it all. Start with small, intentional moments, like reading one verse of the Bible or singing a Christmas hymn together.

Telling the Story of the Savior

The most important thing we can do this Christmas is to take our families to the story of the Savior. Read the Old Testament accounts that promise His birth, and the New Testament accounts that tell of His life, death, and resurrection. Sing great songs of old that remind us of why Jesus came.

Worshiping King Jesus

Remember, the point is intentionality, not quantity. Our kids should see Jesus, not busyness, as the reason for the season. So, let’s clear our calendars, start small, and worship King Jesus. He came once, and He’s coming again. May He be the treasure of our families this busy holiday season.

To God be the Glory,
Courtney
