Living Life with Purpose: A Teen’s Perspective
As a teenager, I’ve often heard my dad say that Christians should be known as the best employees in their workplace. Not because they’re the most skilled or knowledgeable, but because they work with integrity and diligence. They throw themselves into their work, not just for a paycheck, but for the glory of God.
A Culture of Complacency
Sadly, our society has fostered a culture of complacency where teenagers are neither expected nor encouraged to work hard. It’s easy to get by with minimal effort and still receive praise. But this mindset is misguided. We’re not just wasting our time; we’re misusing it. We give less than our best because we’re tired, feel like our efforts are wasted, or fear what others might think. But these excuses fall short of the gospel reality.
Diligence Starts in the Mind
Diligence begins with an attitude that sets us apart from the world. God desires a heart that serves him with its very best. He’s given us many wonderful things to enjoy – art, nature, laughter, and more. But when we get distracted from taking pleasure in these gifts, we misuse our time. It’s easy to get caught up in our own problems and worries, but we must intentionally choose to step out of our bubble and appreciate the wonder of life.
The Danger of Comfort
Most of us live relatively comfortable lives, but comfort can become an idol. When we elevate its status, we begin to worship it and sacrifice things that truly matter – sharing the gospel, church, godly friends, and compassion. We must choose to burst the bubble of comfort and give up smoothness and easiness for the sake of the gospel. There are better things to do than just be comfortable – things like telling someone about Jesus, serving others, and standing up for what’s right.
Eternity in Mind
In light of eternity, this life is just a drop in the bucket. The smart person doesn’t live for the dot; they live for the line. The gospel of Jesus Christ can change how we spend our time. Everything we do should be lived with eternity in mind, fueling our desire to take hold of our lives with passion and purpose. Our time on this earth is short, and we can waste it in sinful busyness or laziness. But the gospel can change how we spend our time, helping us seize life with intention and passion.
What Will You Do Next?
Time is of the essence. What will you do next? Will you continue to live in complacency, or will you choose to live with purpose and passion? The choice is yours.
