The Uncomfortable Truth About Evangelism
Are you willing to face the harsh reality about your evangelism efforts? Dr. A.T. Robertson, a renowned Bible teacher, once told a student, “Well, excuse me, brother, but all I can do for you is pray for you and flunk you.” This blunt assessment might just be the wake-up call we need to examine our own evangelism endeavors.
Excuses, Excuses, Everywhere
We often justify our lack of evangelism with a multitude of excuses. Language barriers, busy schedules, and isolation from unbelievers are just a few examples. But are these excuses really valid? Or are they just a convenient way to avoid sharing the gospel?
Breaking Down the Barriers
Let’s take a closer look at some of the most common excuses we use to justify our nonevangelism. Perhaps we think we’re too busy with other good things, or that we’re not gifted for evangelism. Maybe we’re afraid of rejection or worry about what others will think. Whatever the reason, it’s time to confront our excuses head-on.
Twelve Steps to Evangelism
So, what can we do to overcome our fears and excuses? Here are twelve practical steps to help us get started:
- Pray: Ask God to provide opportunities to share the gospel.
- Plan: Make time to build relationships with non-Christians.
- Accept: Recognize that evangelism is our responsibility as Christians.
- Understand: Study the gospel and be prepared to share it with others.
- Be Faithful: Risk sharing the gospel, even when it’s uncomfortable.
- Prepare: Know the gospel and be humble in your approach.
- Look: Keep your eyes open for opportunities to share the gospel.
- Love: Share the gospel because you love people and want to see them saved.
- Fear: Fear God, not man, and be motivated to share the gospel.
- Stop: Stop making excuses and start sharing the gospel.
- Consider: Consider the reality of death, judgment, and hell, and be motivated to share the gospel.
- Fuel the Flame: Keep your love for God burning brightly, and it will naturally overflow into evangelism.
The Heart of the Matter
At the end of the day, our lack of evangelism is often a heart issue. We must confront our own apathy, selfishness, and fear of man. We must fuel the flame of love for God within us, and let it drive us to share the gospel with others. As Jesus said, “Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks” (Matt. 12:34). What does your mouth speak?
